New Seniors Dental Care initiative launched

The new Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP) for low-income seniors launched last week.  This program is being funded by the Ministry of Health and will provide free dental care to low income seniors.  According to the Government of Ontario “each year in Ontario, preventable dental issues like gum disease, infections and chronic pain lead to more than 60,000 emergency department visits by patients, of which a significant portion are seniors. Low-income seniors face challenges accessing regular dental care because they cannot afford it, impacting their overall well-being.  It is estimated that 100,000 low-income seniors will benefit annually from this program once fully implemented. Two-thirds of low-income seniors don’t have access to dental insurance.”

Ontarians aged 65+ with an income of $19,300 or less, or couples with a combined annual income of $32,300 or less, who do not have dental benefits, will qualify for the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program.  The program will be established in phases and will continue to expand in 2020.

Seniors must apply to ensure they meet qualification criteria. Once approved, clients will be mailed a welcome package and a dental card. Once seniors receive their OSDCP card, they will be able to book an appointment with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.

Interested individuals can apply online at www.ontario.ca/SeniorsDental, print and mail a form, or visit one of the HPEPH offices. The Picton office of HPEPH is located at the Harbourview Centre, 35 Bridge Street, Suite 1.

Public Health will be holding application clinics, where seniors can complete the application and medical history forms with the first clinic on Fri., Dec 6 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Belleville office (179 North Park Street).  To book an appointment for the application clinic call 613-966-5500.
