OPP charge Belleville man in connection with sexual assault

Prince Edward OPP have charged a Belleville man in connection with an unknown number of  occurrences of sexual assault dating back almost a decade.

Earlier this month officers responded to a report of historical sexual assaults. The incidents are alleged to have occurred nearly 10 years ago in Picton. An investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Prince Edward County Crime Unit.

As a result of that investigation, a 22-year-old male from Belleville was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Sexual assault – sec. 271
  • Sexual interference – sec. 151
  • Invitation to sexual touching under 16 years of age – sec. 152

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville at a later date.

OPP confirmed the matter will be dealt with in Youth Court as the suspect was under the age of 18 when the assaults allegedly took place.

In other OPP Police reports, members of the Prince Edward County Detachment arrested two impaired drivers over the past seven days.

• On Thursday, April 23, 2020 shortly before 3:00 p.m. officers responded to a call of a motor vehicle collision on County Road 3 in Ameliasburgh Ward. Officers arrived and located a vehicle on its side in a field. With the assistance of the OPP Canine Unit, the driver was located. As a result of further investigation, the driver, Jacob McCumber, 27, from Prince Edward County, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation While Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) – 320.14(1)(b)
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle- 320.13(1)

The driver was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on May 20, 2020. He was also given a 90 day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

• On Friday, April 24, just after 11:00 p.m. officers received a traffic complaint of a vehicle being driven in an erratic manor on Highway 62. The vehicle was located and the driver spoken to. As a result of further investigation, Jacob Moffatt, 26, from Belleville, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation While Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) – 320.14(1)(b)

The driver was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on May 20, 2020. He was also given a 90 day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension.
