There’s a lot of excitement around the Picton Branch Library expansion right now! An anonymous donor has pledged $100,000 in a matching campaign – every dollar you donate will be doubled, up to $100,000. But hurry! The deadline is December 31, 2020. The goal is to raise $100,000, which will generate $200,000 for the project. Make a donation in your name, or surprise a loved one this holiday season by making a gift in their name.
Donating in someone’s name makes a great gift. It’s not only a present for your friend or family member, but it’s also a gift to the community for many years to come. The library will provide a card of acknowledgement that you can present.
“I am constantly humbled by the generosity of this amazing community that we live in”, said Fundraising Chair Alexandra Bake, “Never more so than at this time. The offer in matched funding will help ensure our library expansion moves ahead very soon. I challenge our community to be as generous as they can be this Christmas season, so that we can raise the full $200,000!”
At the time of writing, $45,000 has already been raised as a result of the matching campaign. The goal is to get shovels in the ground as soon as possible and start the new year with the library renovation and expansion.
COVID-19 has highlighted many of the limitations of the current Picton Library building. It’s difficult to be physically distanced, the capacity for groups is extremely limited, and the washrooms are truly inadequate. The pandemic has also emphasized how important the library building is to you. When we were closed, but able to provide curbside pickup, we received many calls asking when we could welcome you into the branch, because browsing, running into a neighbour, and being inside the library was something you really missed. To be able to safely return to a fuller suite of library services, including groups and larger indoor children’s programs, it is important that these challenges are addressed.
“This expansion is now within our grasp, thanks to the work of the library board and a group of volunteers working hard to make it possible, and thanks to contributors from all across Prince Edward County who have given gifts large and small,” says library CEO Barbara Sweet.
The expansion and renovation to the existing building will double the current space without impacting its historic features. It will feature an enlarged children’s area with space for school classes, groups and families to visit safely, as well as quiet workspaces and meeting rooms. Accessibility improvements and an efficient environmentally conscious design are important aspects of the design. The space will include an expanded collection with more books and DVDs to share with all branches. The Picton Branch Library has been serving the community for 112 years.
Your donation will ensure that the library will continue to enhance the lives of future generations. Give online at loveyourlibrary.ca, at any branch of the library, or by mail at 208 Main Street Picton ON K0K2T0.
