Prohibited driver nabbed as a result of RIDE program

A Prince Edward County man has a court date in Picton later this month after attempting to flee a RIDE program in Athol Ward Saturday evening.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. members from The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward County Detachment were conducting a RIDE program in Cherry Valley. A driver was requested to stop for further investigation. At this point, the vehicle left the scene.

A short while later, the vehicle was located and the driver was arrested. As a result, Darin Watters, 55, from Prince Edward County, has been charged with the following Criminal Code Offences:

  • Flight from peace officer – CC 320.17
  • Failure to comply with demand – CC 320.15(1)
  • Obstruct peace officer – CC 129(a)
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code – CC 320.18(1)(a)

The driver was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on March 24, 2021. The vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

In other OPP news: 

A 13-year-old Prince Edward County resident led local authorities on a multi-jurisdictional vehicle chase on Thursday evening and has been charged with several offences by the Quinte West detachment of the OPP. 

On February 25  at approximately 10:00 p.m., Quinte West OPP responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically eastbound on Dundas Street East in Trenton.

An officer located the vehicle on Dundas Street West near Avondale Road in Belleville and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop for police and for public safety reasons the officer disengaged with the vehicle.

A short time later, the suspect vehicle was observed by officers driving at a high rate of speed southbound on Wallbridge Loyalist Road. Officers deployed a tire deflation device in an attempt to safely stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued and at approximately 11:30 p.m. was apprehended by Belleville Police Service at Bell Boulevard and Cannifton Road in Belleville.

OPP arrested the driver and learned that the vehicle was allegedly stolen from an address in Prince Edward County earlier in the evening.

A 13 year old male from Prince Edward County has been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Dangerous operation; and
  • Flight from peace officer

The accused was released from custody on an Undertaking and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville in April of 2021.

The name of the youth is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
