The municipality celebrated Canada 150 and Prince Edward County 225 last week, planting the first of 10 commemorative trees, one for each ward.

The trees will be planted throughout the fall to honour the milestones and serve as a legacy for future generations of county residents, a news release from the municipality says. All of the tree planting ceremonies will be open to the public and free to attend. Each tree will be marked with a plaque demonstrating the anniversary dates.

Mayor Robert Quaiff was on hand for the planting of the first maple tree at Benson Park on Oct. 18.

“We’ve had such an amazing year filled with endless celebrations for both Canada’s 150th and the County’s 225th anniversaries; it’s been a memorable year for many of us,” Quaiff says in the news release.

He says the tree planting is a great example of events that can be enjoyed by current and future residents of the county.

“This commemorative tree planting initiative is the ideal legacy project to continue the celebration,” he says. “I commend the volunteers on our Canada 150th and Prince Edward County 225 Celebration ad hoc committee for carefully planning and executing this project.”

Residents at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home gathered outside the facility on Oct. 20 for a tree planting of their own.

County businesses, organizations, and individual residents are being encouraged to plant their own commemorative trees. Commemorative plaques can be purchased from the county to accompany the tree by contact the municipality’s customer service desk at 613-476-2148 ext. 1023.

The Canada 150th and Prince Edward County 225 Celebration Ad Hoc Committee comprises community volunteers. The committee has been tasked with overseeing and implementing a marketing and promotional campaign that encourages residents to participate in the milestone events taking place across Prince Edward County in 2017.
