LETTER: More answers available as campaign nears finish line

Candidates for municipal office are well past the half-way mark of their campaigns. A good time for us to update readers about our weekly invitations to candidates to share their thoughts on a wide range of issues.

Twenty-one candidates, including half of the candidates for Mayor and two-thirds of the candidates for Councilor have become regular contributors – including every candidate for Councilor in Bloomfield/Hallowell, Wellington, Athol, North Marysburgh, and South Marysburgh.

Here are just some of the questions that candidates have been asked so far:

Invitation 1 – please tell us about your time in the County; your involvement with municipal government; your volunteering with not-for-profit organizations; your understanding of talk of tension between “old” and “new” residents in the County.

Invitation 3 – please rate and explain your satisfaction with the County’s eight current Strategic Initiatives (e.g. healthcare, affordable housing, short-term accommodations, tourism, water/wastewater infrastructure, etc); please identify one Strategic Initiative that’s missing and should be adopted by Council.

Invitation 6 – referring to 2018-2020 financial statements provided for the County and two comparable municipalities, please rate and explain your satisfaction with the County’s collection of user fees for nine service categories (e.g. transportation, environment, recreation and culture, planning and development, etc).

Candidates’ responses to the final invitation (Invitation 8) will published by Wednesday, October 19th – well in advance of Election Day.
