Serious injuries as a result of alleged impaired driving in Athol

A single motor vehicle crash in Athol Ward Tuesday evening has lead to serious injuries to a female passenger and impaired driving charges for the driver.

On Tuesday September 1, 2020, shortly after 9:30 p.m. officers from the Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Miller Road in Athol Ward.

Hastings Quinte EMS and Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue responded with police and transported one passenger who had been ejected from the vehicle by ambulance to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The two other occupants were also transported to hospital in Picton with minor injuries.

As a result of the collision, Andrew Nathanial Smith, 22 from Picton, has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Operation While Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) – 320.14(1)(b)
  • Operation causing bodily harm – 320.14(2)
  • Dangerous operation causing bodily harm – 320.13(2)

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on September 23, 2020. The accused was also given a 90 day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
