PECMH staff assaulted by detained patient

A number of Prince Edward County Memorial hospital staff members were assaulted and medical equipment damaged by an unruly patient on Sunday afternoon.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward County Detachment responded to a disturbance on Sunday April 18, 2021 shortly after 2:00 p.m. at an address on Upper Lake Street

Officers arrived and conducted further investigation. As a result, it was discovered an individual had been struck with a wooden stake, resulting in minor injuries. The individual was arrested and transported to PECMH for assessment.

While at hospital, the individual assaulted a number of emergency department staff members.

The individual further damaged a series of medical equipment within the emergency department.

As a result, Andrew Smith, 22, of Prince Edward County was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Assault – CC 266 – three counts
  • Assault with a weapon – CC 267(a)
  • Assault with intent to resist arrest – CC 270(1)(b)
  • Mischief under $5000 – CC 430(4)
  • Mischief over $5000 – CC 430(3)
  • Assault a peace officer – CC 270(1)(a)

The accused was held in custody for bail and was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on April 19, 2021.
