Free license plate renewal still required

Effective on March 13, 2022 the Ontario government eliminated licence plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a licence plate sticker for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds.

Renewal fees and requirements for licence plate stickers for heavy commercial vehicles and snowmobiles remain unchanged. Vehicle owners will still be required to renew their licence plate every one or two years at no cost to confirm their automobile insurance is valid and pay any outstanding Highway 407 tolls and other municipal fines.

The government is working with partners to develop a new, more user-friendly process that will continue to validate automobile insurance requirements, support law enforcement efforts and collect municipal fines and unpaid Highway 407 tolls. Your vehicle must have a valid licence plate and be insured to drive legally in Ontario. The licence plate renewal period varies depending on type of vehicle and if you choose to renew for one or two years. To read all about it go to this link www.ontario.ca and search for “renew your licence plate”.

To renew your licence plate, you need: your licence plate number; your vehicle permit number; your insurance company name and policy number; your odometer reading; to pay any defaulted fines, tolls or fees; to pay for your renewal fees (if applicable); an emissions test, if you are renewing for a heavy-duty diesel vehicle (go to the website link below to find out if you need an emissions test on your heavy-duty diesel vehicle).

You can renew online at this link www.services.gov.on.ca or renew in-person at Service Ontario which is located at 1 Pitt Street in Picton (the Courthouse). If you have questions about renewals go to this link www.ontario.ca and search for “renew your licence plate” or call 1-888-777-8906.
