LETTER: County Food Hub looking for board members

The Kitchen that saved a school is in search of two new board members who want to make a difference by guiding one of PEC’s most exciting non-profit organizations.

We are a non-profit health certified commercial kitchen embedded at Sophiasburgh Central School. Our focus is on providing opportunity to local agri-food businesses looking to expand their offerings and on assisting food security groups in Prince Edward County.

At the height of COVID 19 we were the only commercial kitchen open and were assisting Food To Share with preparation of more than 250 meals a week that were delivered to vulnerable residents.

Currently we are partnering with Prince Edward Learning Centre and Huff Family Foundation to bring the PEC Fresh Food Market to Sophiasburgh allowing stigma free shopping for low-cost fresh produce to area residents. All excess produce is distributed to local shelters and food banks.

County Food Hub exists thanks to the vision of the Hastings Prince Edward School District and many supporters in the local community who pushed for the establishment of the kitchen in Sophiasburgh Central, keeping the elementary school from closure. Today the school is thriving with increased enrolment, and it continues to be a central gathering place for the community.

If you are, or know of someone, who wants to join this dedicated community-driven team, please send note to Anne Marie Varner varnerproductions@gmail.com .
