The snow is melting, and the birds are returning – this can only mean one thing!

It’s almost time for the Prince Edward County Authors Festival! On Thursday, April 20, join us for the County Reads. Modeled on the popular Canada Reads event, the County Reads brings five local readers together, each to select one Canadian title and convince the audience why their pick is the one you should read.

Last year, Thomas Harrison successfully championed On Foot to Canterbury by Ken Haigh and we still hear from library patrons who are reading the book because of his passionate presentation. While we can’t tell you the names of the individuals chosen to defend the books in 2023, or their selected titles (yet! Stay tuned to future columns to find out), we are delighted to share that Ken Murray will return as moderator and that the event will take place at Picton’s St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church.

Thanks to the Church for making this possible and for their welcoming hospitality.

Tickets will be $5 at any branch of the library. The Authors Festival will take place virtually this year. As in past years, you’ll be able to join via Zoom live and ask questions throughout. If you do not have internet access or would just like to come watch without having to navigate logging into Zoom, you will be able to drop into the Picton Branch of the library to watch.

You can also give us a call at (613) 476-5962 to book a free one on one session to learn how to use Zoom in advance of the proceedings and how to get registered.

The five Canadian authors who will join us virtually are Sheila Murray (Finding Edward), Helen Humphreys (And a Dog Called Fig: Solitude, Connection, the Writing Life), David A. Robertson (The Theory of Crows), Iain Reid (We Spread) and Mark Bourrie (Big Men Fear Me). We’ll share more about these titles in future columns and all books are available at the library. We will have some excellent local moderators and will announce those soon. You will be able to view the detailed schedule at or at the library.

Our thanks to the amazing volunteer Authors Festival committee members Janet Aston, Alexandra Bake and Marlene Fraser for their dedication to putting on such an exciting festival.
