It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sylvia Gloria Hayes (née Stobee) on August 16, 2026, at the age of 88, at the Friendly Manor Nursing Home in Deseronto.
Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, on October 17, 1937, Sylvia was predeceased by her beloved husband of 46 years, James Jules Hayes; her parents, Adolf Stobee and Terese (née Kettner) Stobee; and her sister, Edith Landgraff.
Sylvia trained as a registered nurse at Regina College and Yorkton General Hospital, later working at both Calgary and Winnipeg General Hospitals. She also studied at Briercrest Bible College before settling with her husband in Napanee, Ontario, in 1966 to raise their family. She continued her nursing career at the Lennox & Addington County General Hospital.
Sylvia served as both a pianist and organist at the Kingston Seventh-Day Adventist church where she attended and regularly volunteered in their soup kitchen. She also gave her time as a tutor and mentor to students in the Napanee community. She cherished her family, found joy in music, and loved tending her garden and creating crafts to share.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children Barbara (Shane) Lakins, William (Carol-Anne) Hayes, and Beverly (Jacob) Affleck; and by her nieces Karen, Susan, and Lorna.The family thanks the staff at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KGH site) and Providence Care Hospital – Parkside for their care of Sylvia. Special thanks to the staff at Friendly Manor, who looked after her with such compassion in her final months.
Sylvia will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Bay View Cemetery in Hope, Quebec, at a private family graveside service.
