Vince “Marty” Martel

Left a hole in our lives on Sunday, October 25th, when he departed for calmer waters from Hospice Prince Edward at the age of 92. Marty, Vince, Ratso, Wib, the Rat – he was a man of many names, many careers, many friends, and many hobbies. He touched so many lives through multiple decades as a high school teacher at PECI, a town councillor, on the fairways at the Picton Golf Club, at the Prince Edward Yacht Club, and he may have even sold you a house. Marty had a keen sense of humour, loved a good debate, was a world traveller an avid reader, never turned down a drink, a social gathering, or an adventure. He was intelligent, infuriating, independent, and was more compassionate than he would like to let on. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, pre–World War II, he was a true Bluenoser, loved the ocean, and later the Great Lakes, spent countless hours on the water (but never drank it), and could maneuver any size or type of boat effortlessly. Marty will be sorely missed by so many in our community, by his extended family in Nova Scotia, but mostly by his wife, Jan Syer, his sparring partner (and stepdaughter), J.J. Syer (J.C. Morliere), and his most precious friend and granddaughter, Sophie Morliere. I’m sure he would want us to send special love to his Yacht Club friends, and Ian Hunt and Barb Wilkins who were such great support to the end (and remind them that he got out without paying his last hockey wager). A Celebration of Life will be held at Prince Edward Yacht Club (Hill St) on Friday, November 21st from 4pm to 7pm with remarks happening around 5:30. Marty would want donations to be directed towards Hospice Prince Edward or the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
