We hear all our Merchants who import goods from New York via Kingston complaining of the delays and obstructions they meet with in the Custom House at the latter place. One gentleman after entering his goods here, and paying the duties, sent down his papers inclosing invoices three times before he could get his goods, and finally had to make a journey down himself. An agent he sent down on one occasion wrote that he “could get no satisfaction, but any quantity of abuse.” This kind of work cannot be tolerated, such Jacks in office must be brought to their senses. It is no use going to extra pains and expense to get goods in early if these fellows are to be permitted to detain goods in Kingston, without any cause, for a week. They may not be all alike, perhaps there are one or two exceptions, but the most of these Custom House fellows in Kingston are entirely unfit for their business. If the government must support such a set of useless drones, far better to build a hospital for incapables, where they may get their sustenance without impeding the business of the Country, or bringing odium on other men, who may be capable and willing to discharge their duty.

We copy the following the Times of yesterday:— “On last Sabbath, the large and commodious Church, lately erected by the Wesleyan Methodists in Picton and surrounding country was opened for Divine Service, by the Rev. A. Green, DD., who preached the Dedicatory sermon in the morning, which was followed in the evening by a sermon from the Rev. John Carroll of Belleville. Although the Church is large, yet it was not capable of seating the large attendance at the morning service. Collections were taken up at both services, to aid the building committee in liquidating the debt necessarily made in completing the edifice, which, we believe, is £600. This amount, one of the Committee has advanced out of his own private means. We have not learned what the late collections amounted to, probably not much, for one of the preachers observed the contributions looked rather brown.

THE ASSIZES.—The Assizes commenced here, yesterday, His Honor Judge McLean, presiding. There were no criminals for trial, and a very moderate number of civil suits. With our boundary lines pretty well settled, and a peaceable population, Prince Edward is a poor place for gentlemen of the long robe.
