The Sophiasburg Agricultural Society was most unfortunate on Saturday last when the weather man handed out about the worst day in the history of this fair. It was rainy in the morning and while there were some indications that fair weather might prevail in the afternoon, these hopes were shattered for the rain kept falling more or less continually all day. This effectually dampened the ardor of would be sight seers and the result was the smallest attendance in years. The society is especially unfortunate this year in the weather for the fair was a week or two earlier than usual and a favorable day was hoped for. The continuous wet weather for the past month has made this season a record one for bad weather at fairs, as very few in the Province have escaped the rain.

In spite of the weather, the exhibit in most classes were quite up to the standard. In the hall the fruit exhibition was especially good. Apples have grown very fast and colored up rapidly in the last two weeks and many fine samples were shown. The exhibit of home cooking, dairy and domestic products and flowers was good. The fancy work exhibit was not as large as usual. In grain and roots the classes were well filled and the quality good.

Demorestville Fair has always been noted for the quality of its horse exhibit. In recent years the motor car has pretty nearly put the driving horse out of business, but there are still some horse lovers who keep fine driving horses.

CATCHES ELEVEN POUND LUNGE IN EAST LAKE

On Saturday Wilson Hubbs caught an eleven pound maskelonge in East Lake. It is the first one of that species ever caught there, and naturally enough Mr. Hubbs feels quite elated over his catch. He had just left Bunnell’s Island and put his troll out when the fish struck, and gave a real battle before it was landed It was 3 feet 6 inches long and 13 inches around the largest part. The head of the fish is now nailed up at Mr. Harry Bryant’s, East Lake, as evidence for those who might doubt that a lunge had really been caught in those waters. Local fishermen will now visit the lake to try to duplicate Mr. Hubbs’ catch.
