1946: AUGUST
August spreads enchantment
O’er all the countryside,
With golden grain in harvest
Where peace and calm abide;
And in her hands are treasures
Of fruit and fragrant flowers,
And over all the sunshine
To gild the summer hours.
But oh! how swift are passing
These golden August days!
These fleeting hours of summer
With morns of purple haze;
In vain we stay their passing,
These days so calm and free,
Long may their presence linger
In happy memory.
