Step back into the Picton of the late nineteenth century on this guided heritage walk exploring the places that shaped composer Gena Branscombe (1881–1977) in her early years. Led by local historian Liz Driver of the PEC Heritage Conservancy, this 60-minute walk traces the streets, buildings, and landscapes that formed the backdrop of Branscombe’s childhood and first musical experiences.
Beginning in the heart of Picton, participants will visit historic sites connected to the town’s cultural life during Branscombe’s youth, schools, churches, and civic spaces that would have been familiar to the young musician before she went on to international recognition as a composer and conductor. Along the way, Liz will share stories of Picton at the turn of the twentieth century and illuminate how this small County town helped nurture one of Canada’s remarkable musical voices.
This relaxed walking tour offers a unique opportunity to experience Picton through the lens of its musical history and to reconnect the community with one of its most accomplished daughters.
This event is presented in partnership with the PEC Heritage Conservancy, with proceeds shared in support of their work preserving Prince Edward County’s rich heritage.
