Ms. Mason, as she’s called, was one of 13 Hastings and Prince Edward District teachers, principals and secretaries presented with the Inspiring Excellence Award, the highest recognition for school staff who make significant contributions to student achievement and well-being through their leadership in education.
According to supporting submissions from both parents and colleagues, Ms. Mason is well above the grade when it comes to caring for children.
“I have never had any doubts about Ms. Mason’s ability to create a safe, welcoming, and emotionally supportive environment. She genuinely cares about her students and takes the time to get to know each child’s individual needs. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, addressing concerns with kindness, or creating a safe space for students to express themselves, Mrs. Mason ensures her classroom is a place where my daughter feels secure and valued every day. This has made a huge difference in her confidence and overall well-being,” wrote one parent.
“After each recess, Ms. Mason asks her class to take ten minutes to get back in the ‘Green Zone.’ She has quiet music on, the lights low, and the children sit with their heads down or lie on the floor,” another parent said. “This helped them transition from the high level of energy at recess to a respectful learning environment. The children are also given autonomy— the opportunity to move to a different working group if they need a change.”
Seen, heard, and valued
A fellow PECI teacher said Ms. Mason has an innate ability to make every child feel seen, heard, and valued in her classroom. Her commitment to improving student success is evident in the way she consistently creates an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students can thrive.
“Every student that enters her classroom in September arrives with a clean slate. She welcomes students who are considered ‘challenging’. Suddenly, they blossom under her watch. All students who enter her classroom leave with a sense of belonging, a sense of trust, and a deepened belief in their own potential. Teresa’s classroom is a space where students are encouraged to challenge themselves while feeling supported in their personal growth.
“Teresa is a true exemplar of what it means to be an educator who goes above and beyond to foster a culture of excellence,” the teacher wrote.
Reached while on sabbatical, Ms. Mason said it means the world to be recognized by parents, peers, and the PECI community.
“But the greatest award is seeing the growth my kids make.”
