Shuttered since 2019 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, new organizers have resurrected the Kids of Steel triathalon. Athletes from the Quinte region and all over Ontario will descend on Picton Sunday 8 June to swim, run and cycle their way around the town’s west end. The course, based around the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre, has running and cycling routes on Loyalist Parkway, Main Street and the Millennium Trail.
Lead organizer Paige Wentworth recalled watching her nieces and nephews compete in the event and, with children of her own, linked up with some friends to explore a revival.
At its peak in popularity, several hundred children competed in Kids of Steel in Picton. The event was part of a provincial youth triathlon circuit and drew many competitors from out of town.
That didn’t stop local children in trying their hand. Many made their way to the top of the podiums. But for most, KOS isn’t about medals and personal bests. It’s about fun, and choosing healthy activities and lifestyles.
“Bringing KOS back started out as a conversation amongst some friends who wanted to have more fun, athletic-driven events for both youth and adults in Prince Edward County,” said Ms. Wentworth. “I remember volunteering in previous events and how great they were for our youth. Our kids have missed out on participating in events like this and having a sense of accomplishment and athletic empowerment.”
Organizing started last summer. Over 110 children are pre-registered. The group has linked up with The Children’s Foundation to ensure registration costs are not a barrier. 100 People Who Care Prince Edward County voted to support KOS at their quarterly meeting in early April.
The 100 People Who Care group presented nearly $10,000 to the organizing committee.
“It’s been a lot of work over the last 12 months but we are set for June 8. Our capacity is set at 250 competitors and we are working with local tourism groups to promote it. Above all, though, we want to make sure local children have every opportunity to take part,” Ms. Wentworth added.
Routes are being altered in 2025 over previous years for safety and logistical reasons. Cycling will now take place along the length of the Millennium Trail with rolling road closures where it bisects Sandy Hook and County Road 32. The running route will see competitors run east along Loyalist Parkway to where it transitions to Main Street. Runners will turn right on to Lake Street at the LCBO and travel to the Millennium Trail and towards PEFAC .
